Ramblings of a Crazy Mind is my favorite short story so far.
It began with a simple idea: What if you could become the person you always wished you were, and what if, little by little, there was nothing left of you?
The story follows Anonymous, a struggling horror writer living in Carpinteria, California, who stumbles upon a mysterious woman selling curiosities from another world. Among her possessions are objects that once belonged to the dead. Each carries something of its former owner: talent, confidence, knowledge, desire.
Anonymous begins collecting them. At first, his life gets better. Then the dead begin collecting him.
I originally wrote Ramblings of a Crazy Mind in 2017. Looking at it again almost a decade later, I realized how much of the fictional world I would eventually build was already hiding inside this story: familiar streets made strange, the supernatural bleeding into ordinary life, recurring characters, and the mysterious woman in blue who would eventually find her way into other stories.
So I decided to bring it back.
It’s dark, strange, occasionally profane, and more than a little unhinged, which, considering the title, seems appropriate.
Ramblings of a Crazy Mind is now available on Amazon.
If you decide to enter Anonymous’s world, just remember one thing:
All sales are final.
